Music, art, literature and science were themes of study as students in lower elementary delved into the diverse and fascinating cultures of Europe. Students were immersed in the music of Europe’s most acclaimed artists. They analyzed the concepts of good vs. evil and truth and beauty in Andersen’s fairytales and through reading, reciting and performing brought to life the work of this prolific writer. The world of science took students on outings, where investigations and research of the coldest regions of Europe led them to call on all mankind to protect the animals of these icy ecosystems. Science experiments and exhibitions reflect what students learned about Alfred Nobel, creator of the Nobel peace prize and through their studies, they understand the peace and power that creation brings to human society and how every new invention creates opportunity for further exploration and invention.
The themes of art and literature continue in middle elementary school, as students read Pinocchio, the famous story of a puppet who dreamed of being a real boy. Through their study of the origin and history of European puppetry, students drew comparisons between Chinese and European puppet art and used their knowledge to create their own original and unique puppets. Students immersed themselves in Europe’s rich art as they critiqued famous paintings, designed era-specific costumes and hats and tasted the many flavors of European cuisine. Through the explorations of European architecture, with its prominent shapes and varied colors, students grew to appreciate architectural aesthetics and were able to fully experience this culture by using building blocks and paper molds to build their own architectural models.
Upper elementary students learned how European innovations have influenced the globe. Beginning with the Industrial Revolution, European scientists and scholars have greatly promoted the transformation of human society in economics, politics, and culture. The conclusion is that the development of science and technology affects the way of life and thinking of people throughout the world. With the continuous advancement of science and technology, all aspects of human daily life will continue to undergo impactful change.
A grand event of all disciplines
In the Chinese class, students read the diversified interpretations of European literary masters, from Andersen, the father of fairy tales, to Hemmingway, the legend of literature. The writings of the literary greats of Europe were analyzed as students explored the geography, history, customs and cultures of Southern European countries. Through their comparison of Chinese and European myths and fables, students cultivated knowledge through creative dress-up stories. Students further immersed themselves in European art culture by designing story stickers and handmade playing cards. They explored Central Europe by comparing fables, reading ancient Greek mythology and studying the notes of European literary masters, resulting in meaningful and insightful student reflections.
Mathematics teachers guided students as they accessed their understanding of geometrical mathematics to establish connections with their knowledge of angles, cubes and faces. Through special activities, such as spelling with Rubik’s Cubes, and analysis of the magical Mobius ring, students were able to enter the magical world of mathematics. Mathematics was further addressed as student learned to cook European cuisine. In doing so, one must learn grams, kilograms, temperature, cooking time, quantity, and food portions. These measurement units must not be mistaken!
In English Language Arts, teachers facilitated activities of extensive in-class reading and text interpretation that promoted a profound understanding of well-known European legends and fables. The exhibition of famous European quotes speaks to the culture of European literature and through reading, writing and acting students grew to understand the philosophy of life behind the words.
The Bilingual department of music, sports and art encompasses the most representative cultural and art courses in the curriculum. By integrating each discipline, students are led on a journey of art exploration and creative expression. Teachers and children worked together in preparations for a large-scale concert for the carnival closing ceremony. It is a time for us all to enjoy performances of song and dance that highlight the cultures of different European countries. The props were all made by students. Sit back and enjoy as every child shines as indispensable protagonists on the carnival stage!
