On May 7th and 8th, SUIS Qingpu Middle School held a Debate Competition. The theme was “Growing up, is it a good thing or a bad thing?”
In the first stage, the affirmative side and negative side each expressed their points clearly.
In the second session, the negative side proposed that children are more imaginative than adults, which was recognized by the audience.
However, the affirmative side claimed that we cannot choose whether to grow up or not, the only thing we can do is to build a strong mind.
After that, it was the 4-minute free debate.
Then the Chinese teachers commented and made suggestions. Finally, 6B won the championship. Rickey Gu from 6B won the “Best Debater”.
Reflections from Students
I remember that before the competition, I think the debate is a very simple thing, isn’t it “quarreling” with people on the stage? But when I really got into the group discussion, I realized that “the paper is shallow, and I absolutely know that I have to practice it.” The truth of the eternal saying. The first time I participated in the debate, I was very nervous and had no self-confidence. However, my debaters and teachers encouraged me to collect information, hold teleconferences and prepare the debate with me, which made me feel a sense of collective honor and self-confidence.

I have benefited a lot from this debate competition. Although it is over, the passion of the competition is still stirring up ripples in my heart. I understand that the real significance of this activity is not to separate the winners and losers of the debate. More importantly, it is to let us learn to unite and work hard, to improve our ability to adapt to circumstances on the spot, and to understand the real truth behind the debate.
